Sophie Arup
I am an artist living and working in London. I work with many different materials, from steel to folded paper and wire. My artwork is often composed of countless intricate elements, which combine together to form a dense and complex space that allows you to contemplate both infinity and minute detail at the same time. I love the way that simple repetitions or rules can be used to generate complex structured patterns, and the way that a small initial variation can have a very different end result.
I have a background in Structural Engineering, and this experience definitely informs my work. I love the rigour and discipline of mathematical progressions and fractals. I often design and experiment on a computer, but the final work is made by hand. The many small inaccuracies and mistakes along the way give the pieces their own life and raises them above the purely mechanical exercise that they might otherwise become.
