Spiral drawing (2003)
Black nylon wire, timber frame
This spiral is made from nylon wires stretched between a timber frame. It starts with a single wire at the centre. Another is laid on top, then another and another, each one rotated slightly. At first it just looks like straight lines crossing in the middle, but slowly from the dark centre a tiny spiral starts to emerge, gradually getting larger and more defined as it moves outwards. As each wire is placed a little above the one before, the spiral literally grows out of the centre towards you. The spiral has a real sense of being a continuous curved form even though it is made entirely of straight tangential lines.
